Seasonal illnesses in Japan

Common health concerns change with the season. Spring may bring pollen allergy symptoms; summer increases the risk of heat-related illness and dehydration; autumn and winter bring more acute respiratory infections such as influenza.

When to seek medical care

• Fever that persists or is accompanied by marked fatigue
• Persistent cough, wheezing or shortness of breath
• Vomiting or diarrhea with difficulty drinking fluids
• Allergy symptoms that interfere with sleep, work or school
• Any symptom that is worsening rather than improving

Severe shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, ongoing seizures or inability to drink fluids may require urgent or emergency care rather than a routine appointment.
